Why we should all love Paramore

I've been listening to a lot of music whilst doing work this week. I was listening to Paramore this afternoon and watched the video to 'the only exception'.

I love Hayley Williams' style, it's a mixture of tomboy with girly and also has a punk twist, and it works really well. Her style in B.O.B's 'airplanes' video is great as well.

I'm so glad they didn't split up, can't wait to see them in November.

My new favourite photographer

I stumbled across Tim Walker's photos today whilst doing some researching. I've seen some of his stuff before but haven't looked much into him. But I thought these photos were amazing. I especially like the dresses one below.

HOORAY!!!

This is a well deserved celebration for the new trends of Autumn. I personally love them! Simple as. Let me go into more detail:

1. Teal - Teal is going to be a big colour in Autumn/Winter this year. My friend, who's a big fan of teal, sent this reply when I told her it was coming back into fashion: 'Flipping amazing! I'm well prepared.' We rejoice for this wondrous colour.

2. Knitted Cardigans - I love the Dior cream cardigan with light blue ribbons weaved through it. But seen as I can't afford to buy designer, I will be making my own version. Cute chunky, ribbon adorned cardigans = yes please!

3. Skater skirts - This style of skirt, which is pleated and worn high on the hips, is cute and girly. But worn with leggings or thick tights and pumps it gives it a bit of a tomboy edge. It's definately going to be my style this autumn.

Hoorah for clothes!!

Saturday, 10 July 2010

As I was in a department store the other day I came across this pyjama top. At first, I found it quite funny that they have made such a obvious grammatic mistake, but the more i thought about it the more I got annoyed. When I tell people that I study fashion design, a few people have often given me certain looks and are quick to judge that I must not be that clever, this is because they assume that people who study this subject only do it because they 'like clothes' or 'like shopping'. So for a top that manages to go from designing, through to manufacture and finally appearing in shops, really doesn't do us any favours.

James Corden and Patrick Stewart

Over the past week I have been hearing a lot about James Corden and Patrick Stewart's bust-up at the Glamour awards, so wehen I had the chance I went and looked at it on Youtube. I couldn't believe the way Patrick Stewart behaved. He was so rude to James Corden and just seemed to make the whole of the audience cringe. Apparently, Corden had made a joke about Stewart earlier on, but it was just meant to be a joke, Stewart's jokes seemed to be a lot more truthful and intended to be hurtful. What struck me the most was how much it reminded me of being at school and university. Being on a fashion course, one of the bitchiest around, I constantly have people sneering at me and no doubt saying things behind my back. I often exclaim to my friend, 'why do people have the right to judge and say things about you, when they don't even know you?!' I'm sure from time to time we think certain things about people we see in the streets, but I try to stick to the idea that if you wouldn't say it to their face or to someone who knows them, then you shouldn't really be saying it at all. Sometimes this doesn't always work out, especially when I get annoyed or just fed up, but I try my best. I can't believe that someone like Patrick Stewart, who is a well-established actor behaved this way in the public. Fair enough, Corden answered back which probably made things worse, but I would love know what was going through Stewart's head at the time.

Sex and the City

Yes, I went to see Sex and the City today, primarily to see the outfits, they were amazing! I love how extravagant and weird they all are. My favourite had to be Carrie's huge lilac skirt when she's in the market, I loved how big and voluminous it was!

The OC: Summer Roberts

Right, the heart top I was talking about in the last post is the one on the left side in the middle. You can't see much of it but it's red with hearts making a strap.

I know this is going to be controversial, but I much prefer Summer's style than Marissa's, but this could probably be because it is quite similar to mine and what I want mine to be like. I also found a good website for photos which was liketheoc.tumblr.com, so thanks the creator for the photos!

I love sparkly things, so this sparkly shrug was a definite favourite.I like this red spotty dress from one of the episodes, it's simple but works really well. This photo's just good because of the cuteness of the hats and the episode. The coffee cart episode was one of the best ones ever, I also loved the pastel stripy top and how it was dressed up with another sparkly shrug.I'm not a big pick fan, but I love the floatiness of the dress and how summery it is.I loved the wedding dress in the last episode.

The OC: Marissa Cooper

I've been watching the OC again whilst I've been doing Uni work, and it reminded me of how fashionable the series was at the time. I personally still remember some of the outfits worn and I think to some extent it still influences what I wear now. So I've picked some of my favourite Marissa Cooper (played by Mischa Barton) outfits.

I love the cream dress and pearls when it's the school prom episode. Even though it uses simple, plain colours it works really well and I've always loved the pearls!I liked the short-sleeved orange jacket worn in this episode in season 2. It's summery, bright and cheerful.I really like how natural this hairstyle is but it still looks really sophisticated. I also like how it's paired with just a plain t-shirt.I like this group photo because all the women's dresses are different. I love Rachel Bilson's (the light blue dress) and I love Mischa Barton's navy dress too. There's also a red heart top that I loved as well, but I can't find a photo of it, but I'll try my hardest to get a picture of it. I'll be doing Summer's outfits soon!

Does one size really flatter all?

I've been doing some research into the concept of 'one size fits all' recently for my uni work. Basically, one size fits all (in relation to clothing) means that clothing can fit a range of sizes. This means that they can stretch to fit larger sizes or be tied and wrapped to fit a smaller size. I'm really fascinated by this concept, because how handy would it be to walk into a shop and just pick something up you like and not being concerned about the size. You would never have to waste time trying things on, which means you could hit a lot more shops in a shorter amount of time.

However, there's one niggling question in the back of my mind. It's alright saying clothing can fit a range of sizes, but will it flatter? Sizing is difficult with clothing because a range of people may be the same size, but they will have curves in different places and areas that they want to show off or conceal. So is it not virtually impossible to create a garment that can flatter lots of people?

Well, I hope not, because in this new world of shoping all the time online, wouldn't it be handy not to worry about if you're buying the right size clothes and buying presents for people would be so easy!
Maybe I should just keep asking the rheotorical questions, definately need to do more research into this. I shall keep you posted!

Paint me colourful

I have a thing about bright colours at the moment as they are making me happy through all the mountains of work I have to do. One thing that is especially good for making things bright is nail varnish. On my bookshelf I have all my varnishes lined up in colour order. I have reds, oranges, blues, greens, purples, the list goes on. But there's still one colour I'm yet to find, the elusive Barry M mint green. I say this because I took a special trip to Boots last week and there was no mint green shade to be found. Barry M's colours are amazingly bright and paint on really well, even on my stumpy nails. Hopefully I'll have better look next time.

Summer needs to come quicker!

I can't wait for summer! It's starting to tempt us all with days or moments in days with bright, warm sunshine and it's not quite so freezing on an evening. I just love summer, I like going outside without worrying about taking lots of layers of clothes and not coming home shivering and having to jump into bed to get warm again.
I love summer fashion. I love how relaxed it is with guys in shorts and tshirts and girls in vest tops, floaty skirts, shorts or summery dresses. Everyone seems a lot calmer because even if you're having a bad day the sunshine makes it that bit better.
I also love Quinn from glee's fashion, it's all girly with pastel colours which are in fashion at the moment. If you've watched the show you'll know what I mean with floaty layers, cute little cardigans and ribbon headbands. I think everyone needs to take some inspiration from this for summer!

Rediscovering music

I was on the bus today listening to my ipod on shuffle, and Linkin Park and Jay Z came on. What an amazing collaboration it was, I'm still kind of in awe of it. Obviously most people will know Numb/Encore, but I also love Points of Authority/99 Problems. I love the fact that the songs alone are great songs, and put together they are still great. I would've never have thought that these songs work work well together until they did.

Also, I'm going to see Laura Marling next week, yay! I love how chilled and relaxed her music is. It's also in the Opera House in York, so definitely grander than the usual gig places I frequent!

I know I keep going back to this article in Nylon, but if I could walk in heels, I would wear these:
but I would have to have this dress, and look good in both these items, which probably would never happen because I doubt bright yellow and green would suit me!

What looks better?

I have been researching into weight issues within fashion over the past couple of weeks. But which extreme looks better?
Skinny or overweight? Neither are healthy, so why can't we go for some 'normal' figures and start seeing them down the catwalk.

I love this paragraph from a coke advert. It's above my bed and I read it often.
It says: 'make it the latest trend then abandon it,and start a new one. Make it something that turns heads. Make it you. Make it real. Make it an overheated seing machine at 3am. Make it transform a pile of scrap fabric into a next level handbag.Make it new. Make it sparkle. Make it do the talking for you. Make is somethins that everyone will call a statement, but you'll just call it a random tuesday.'
