Home-made goodies

Some things I've made today:

This was a vintage shirt that I bought for £2. It was really baggy, so I put some beaded thread just above the waistline to gather it in. I think it looks quite cute!

This was made from a t-shirt I was given. All I did was tie the sleeves up with ribbon to make it short-sleeved instead of long. I then made a brooch out of ribbon and a heart earring. Not sure whether I'll wear this much because it's not really my colour, but it has potential.

I got this top from a sale ages ago, it was really pouffy and weird shaped, so I chopped off the sleeves and made a scooped neckline. I then added buttons on the back to make it a bit more unusual.
Lovely jubbly

If it wasn't this, it'd be something else...

Elizabethtown is probably one of my favourite films. Now it's not one known for it's popularity and a few people I know didn't like it, but I do. It's not one of those films that is action-packed with lots of things happening all at once. It is simple, basic but refreshing. The two main characters have lost some of their hope in their lives. The guy has failed and the girl feels a bit lost, though she is suprisingly optimistic in the strangest of situations. Of course, it has the usually cliches of most romantic comedies, but there's something about it that makes me want to watch it over and over. It's one of those films that needs to be watched when you're by yourself, it doesn't seem like a good 'group' film. I suppose I should comment on the fashion (as this is the point of this blog) and I'd say that the fashion was basic but alternative. Kirsten Dunst (the female lead) is very bohemian in this film, so the combination of cardigans, floral skirts and an orange bag seem to be the theme and the black and white dress she wears is amazing (I want one!). But it works really well. Susan Sarandon's suit that she wears to the memorial with the ribbon ties on the sleeves adds a different and rather cute touch to a serious garment that doesn't usually contain much embellishment. Generally this film is not necessarily covering new ground, but with the Temptation's 'Can't get next to you' (one of my favourite songs) on the soundtrack, how could I not love this film?!

Hooray for the Obamas!

I think I was probably feeling the same way as most when Barack Obama became president, happy. It signalled change in the USA and hope for most Americans. But I'm now also growing to like the rest of his family, the daughters seem very cute and Michelle Obama seems to be raising the fashion stakes in the world of politics. Since Obama came into the spotlight at the beginning of the presendential election, fashion magazines have commented on the way she dresses. From reading an article about her, she says that it's not necessarily the designers she loves, she just loves clothes. She loves colour and when talking about posing for InStyle magazine she said " While I don't consider myself a fashionista,I thought it was good for my daughters and little girls just like them, who haven't seen themselves represented in these magazines, hopefully to talk more broadly about what beauty is, what intelligence is, what counts". Sleeveless, shift dresses became the new thing to wear when she was seen wearing them and a black and white dress (centre) she wore on TV became a bestseller.I think it's quite refreshing to see someone who is in the fashion spotlight to have such a different view about clothes, in the way that she doesn't wear clothes just to make a statement, she primarily enjoys wearing them. Hooray for change!
